Vern grew up in Penticton B.C. Vern attended University of Victoria and Graduated with an Economics Degree in 1987.
Since 1988, Vern worked in Calgary as a Buyer for Loblaws, Senior Logistics purchaser for Evans Consoles, and Strategic Sourcing Specialist – Engineering Services – Work Equipment for Canadian Pacific Railway.
In 2002, Vern started an independent craft beer & wine import and distribution business. Vern sourced and introduced Brew Dog and other top-rated brews into western Canada. The company currently represents award-winning craft brewers & cider makers from around the world.
Since 2005 Vern has lived in Airdrie with his family and enjoys to play golf and recreational hockey.
Vern's beer distribution firm was an advocate for the fledgling Calgary Beer Festival in 2005, inviting influential brewers and brewery owners to introduce Calgarians to learn about the History of Beer, its ingredients and styles.
Vern congratulates Calgary Beer Festival organizers who have evolved to become the marketing force behind Alberta Beer Festivals. Alberta Beer Festivals now manage a 6 pack of annual festivals in Calgary, Edmonton, Banff & Jasper.
A decade ago in 2009, Vern with help from Calgary Flames Alumni and local volunteers in Montana founded the Craft Brewers Hockey League. Co-rec teams from Airdrie to Polson Montana play outdoors to help fundraise for the Flathead Valley Hockey Association in Kalispell MT. It has grown from 4 teams over 1 day to a 3-day event in 2018.
Since the opening of Olds College Brewery in 2012, Vern volunteers annually on the Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management Industry Advisory Committee & has been a guest lecturer introducing students to packaging innovation, yield, and shelf life improving dry hopping techniques, and on and off-premise sales and marketing strategies.
