Provincial Board Strategic Planning Session

The Provincial Board and party stakeholders are meeting this weekend in St. Albert to draft a strategic plan for the next year. Alberta Party President Conrad Guay described the session as:

This weekend is all about taking a critical look at where we are, and where we need to be as we move towards 2023. I continue to be not only excited, but impressed with the caliber of talent that is sitting around that table (responsibly distancing of course!) and my hope is that we set a lasting tone that carries us on to electoral success.

- Alberta Party President Conrad Guay

We can’t wait to share the details with all of our members over the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Update From Acting Leader Jacquie Fenske

Jacquie spent this week calling members across Alberta, filming videos (stay tuned for those), and prepping for the strategic planning session.

Jacquie is on the road frequently, travelling across the province meeting with members and advocating for the party. If you’d like Jacquie to visit your constituency, or have ideas for a local event, contact us at [email protected].

Fundraising For The Alberta Party

We just finished tallying our fundraising numbers for Q3 and are happy to share that the party is gaining momentum! We have raised over $35,000, which is almost double the amount raised in Q2.

A big thanks to the group of members who set a province wide challenge in the Alberta Party Facebook Group to increase our Q3 fundraising totals. In just 24 hours the Facebook group raised nearly $3,000. Thanks to everyone who donated and a big thanks to Wayne for launching the challenge.

In the next year we are looking forward to holding the leadership race and a policy convention as we continue to prepare for the election. Let’s continue the great fundraising work our team has accomplished this past quarter so we are prepared to meet these opportunities in 2021.

Can you help out now by chipping in $10 a month so we can continue building an alternative for Albertans?

Centrist Viability

Centrist political parties were featured in the news this week as a viable political option for our neighbour province.

With the Saskatchewan provincial election a week away, a poll by Angus Reid asked residents if they thought a third party located in the centre would be a viable option. Half of respondents responded that this would be a welcome development.

Thankfully, Alberta already has a centrist option and our neighbours have reinforced the importance of having that choice. We need to continue our work providing Albertans a viable option that doesn’t strip away health care or condemn family values.

The best way for us to prepare for the next election is to have strong local representation at the constituency level. Help grow the party at a local level and join us at a virtual CA 101 seminar.

This Week in Alberta

The UCP announced this week they plan to move forward with some of the Ernst and Young recommendations on health care spending. The announcement will see 9,700 AHS positions outsourced and 1,300 positions cut, either through attrition or the elimination of management positions.

As an Alberta Party MLA, Greg Clark spoke against bringing private lab services into the public system, arguing it is an ideological choice that will cost Albertans more in the long run.

Numbers released this week from the MNP Consumer Debt Index, one of the largest full-service chartered accountancy and business advisory firms in Canada, show the economic hardships facing Albertans. The Index found that 25 percent of Albertans are unable to pay their debt, up five percent from June.

On Thursday, the UCP Government announced that they will repeal Bill 10, the Public Health (Emergency Powers) Amendment Act, which gave the government vast powers over the public.

The Alberta Party called for a sunset clause in the Bill as the repeal involves giving too much power to the Executive.

Wayne Rufiange, Alberta Party Shadow Cabinet Minister for Mental Health and Addictions, writes about the struggles facing Alberta and his thoughts on how to get best in class mental health and addiction service for Albertans.

Board Bio — Larry Ottewell

Larry is one of the new provincial board members who was elected at the Alberta Party AGM in August. He was nominated and elected from the floor, a unique experience considering it was all done virtually.

We are looking forward to having Larry’s expertise on our Shadow Budget team as he has extensive experience in economic policy. Previously, Larry was involved with the High River recovery response which is where he connected with former Alberta Party MLA, Ric Fraser and was bitten by the politics bug.

He went on to become a member of the Calgary Mountain View Constituency Association board and now sits on the provincial board.
