Leader’s Breakfast

Interested in discussing arts, culture, tourism, small business, and the status of the Party and the political scene in Alberta? Join Acting Leader Jacquie Fenske and special guests Grant Berg, Brenda Stanton and Jennifer Metituk at the 2nd Online Leader’s Breakfast on Saturday, Nov 7.

The Leader’s Breakfast is a staple of provincial politics, but we have to do it a little different this year. You get to pick your breakfast meal (many may see this as an improvement) and don’t need to worry about what to wear. We hope to see you online.

This Week in Alberta

Monday brought disruption to our healthcare system, as a wildcat strike from AUPE members working for AHS began.

This is a result of the Kenney government undertaking massive changes to Alberta Health Services (AHS) without proper consultation and without a willingness to compromise. At the same time, the UCP is constrained by the failure of the previous NDP government. The NDP made far-reaching promises and didn't deliver on properly reforming and re-imagining AHS. Fundamentally this is a needless conflict, not over policy, but trust.

There was a shakeup in Alberta’s oil patch this week when Cenovus announced a $3.8B takeover of Husky. This has the potential to create a midwestern refining giant. But these benefits will be offset by a 25% reduction in the combined workforce, meaning more layoffs are coming for our hard-hit province.

There was some good news in the energy sector this week as Suncor announced they will be moving their Mississauga and Oakville offices to Calgary. This will bring some jobs to the city.
