Update from Acting Leader Jacquie Fenske

This week, while Jacquie focused on stakeholder meetings and phone calls with members, she made time to make a quick trip to Ponoka for a safe in-person meeting. There, she heard about the main issues facing rural areas right now.

Fundraising

What are we fundraising for right now? Last week we mentioned that one of our biggest projects is to update our website.

Why do we need to update the website?

The website is overdue for an overhaul. We need the updates to handle increased traffic, to seamlessly load the pages and to ensure there are no hiccups in the updates, RSVP, ticket and donation processes.

Donate $23 towards the Alberta Party website

  • Some of you may have noticed that the site can load very slowly on some pages. The overhaul would address the loading issues and create a better experience for supporters as well as new people interested in the party
  • The overhaul would enable the team to create content more easily that would help you bring the Alberta Party’s message to your communities
  • Behind the scenes, a streamlined back end would align our site with today’s search engine optimization (SEO) best practices that would help the party be more discoverable online
  • The overhaul would enable us to take advantage of newer features offered by our website’s platform NationBuilder. This includes community building, member relationship management and overall solid data practices that will help lead us into the leadership race and next election cycle

How much does a website overhaul cost? Early estimates are budgeted between $10,000 and $15,000.

We have already earmarked some of our increased donations this quarter to this project, but we need your help to make this happen.

This Week in Alberta

COVID-19 cases in Alberta skyrocketed to the highest in the nation this week, and as a result, after days of many wondering where the Premier was, new restrictions were put in place on family and social gatherings.

The same day the Premier introduced new COVID-19 restrictions, the Finance Minister gave a fall fiscal update. Alberta will post a $21.3B deficit in 2020/21.

A new report from the Canadian Energy Regulator predicted mixed news for the Alberta energy sector, as they predicted a decrease in fossil fuel use by 2050. The decline is anticipated to be partially due to federal targets to become net zero by 2050.

However, Alberta will also play a role - this op-ed in the Globe and Mail points out the continuing importance of the oil and gas industry to Canadian climate goals.

Despite the decline, two-thirds of Canada’s energy mix are still expected to be made up of fossil fuels.
