Bill 1 Gives Cabinet Too Much Power
The Kenney Government’s Bill 1, the Critical Infrastructure Defence Act, is a framework to protect infrastructure critical to our economy. But the bill is a dangerous big government power grab. Bill 1 is poorly thought out, and will inevitably face a Charter challenge, wasting the time and money of taxpayers.
While it remains important to protect critical infrastructure, Bill 1 gives cabinet the ability to define “essential infrastructure.” This leaves the bill open to political abuse. The Alberta Party calls for the definition of “essential” to be put to the legislative assembly, not at the discretion of cabinet.
The UCP government likes to think of itself as ideologically opposed to big government and the protector of personal liberties, liberties that include the freedom of assembly and speech. Bill 1 puts these freedoms at risk.
