Leader's Update

Update from Jacquie Fenske

What is politics if not talking to Albertans? Without consultation, those of us who have sat in the Legislature would be able to do nothing. Polls can be wrong, or misleading, and they do not get to the human-side of an issue. It’s why, when I was an MLA, I was always excited to just get out and talk to my constituents.

There’s a lot to criticize about the current government, but their failure to consult may be the biggest problem. It’s both good politics and good governance to consult widely and meaningfully, not just with lobbyists and special interest groups, but Albertans.

That’s why this week we released to the press a call to enact legislation that would codify a consultation process that is transparent, open and fair. It would engage Albertans in person and online, and the goal would be dialogue, not presentations. You can read the full statement here.

This is an issue that is blind to any sort of policy preferences any of us may have. It is about just doing what is best for Albertans.

And remember, you can always drop me a line at [email protected].

Thank you,

Big Listen Events:

The Shadow Cabinet Ministers are hosting regular Big Listen Events all summer and we would love your help in filling them with as many non-members as possible. The events are purposefully small to make sure people have great discussions and make connections. You can help by inviting people you know that may be interested.

So please share this event with your friends and encourage them to come too! Watch for future sessions in-person and online throughout the summer.

This Week in Alberta

Parole Board

One of the reasons the UCP government passed legislation to create a new provincial parole board was so that parole decisions would be accountable to Albertans. That is why the UCP’s failure to release any of those decisions to the public is so troublesome. The UCP claims other provinces do not release the information either - but that is a poor excuse. All Canadians deserve a transparent parole system. The government has nothing to lose by making the information, risk assessments, and decisions public. This information will help people assess how the board is doing and whether public safety is being served. The Alberta Party calls for transparency wherever possible and this is no exception.

Mine Stop Order

A federal court judge quashed a federal order stopping the expansion of Coalspur Mines Ltd.’s Vista Mine, near Hinton. The stop order came because of concerns over climate change. Justice Henry Brown ruled that Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson failed to consult a First Nation that supported the expansion. Our government should take into consideration all sides of an issue. Not just the sides they agree with. Consultation should happen to gain data and evidence that goes into decision making - the decision only be made afterwards.

Economic Transition Plan

This week, the Liberal government in Ottawa announced a “Just Transition” plan. The only news is that they plan to help oil and gas workers move into other areas of the economy. Alberta’s UCP energy minister Sonya Savage was quick to denounce the announcement. Few details are public yet and there will be a lengthy consultation process, where the province will have the ability to shape the program. Ottawa and Alberta need to work together to ensure a future for Alberta energy workers as prosperous as the past. Alberta won’t get that aid if government ministers are more focused on fighting than working with the feds. That is why the Alberta Party will always put Albertans first, even at the expense of election-winning rhetoric. People over politics.

Interesting Read

How about a podcast instead of a read? A segment from the CBC details the baby bust that was brought on by the pandemic, and how dwindling birth rates will affect the economy.

For a really long read on the multitude of effects that declining birth rates have not only on the economy but arts, cultures, and society as a whole, consider picking up The Decadent Society by New York Times columnist Ross Douthat or Empty Planet by Globe and Mail columnist John Ivison and Darrell Bricker.
