This Week in Alberta
AHS Cutbacks
Albertans continue to suffer due to the failure of the current government to negotiate with health care workers. Last week we highlighted the wage rollback for nurses. This week, two hospitals were hit with bed closures due to staffing shortages. A collaborative approach to health care that emphasizes the best outcomes for patients is at the core of Alberta Party health care policy. Hear more about this topic in Jacquie’s interview on 630CHED Thursday.
Industry Building
A new poll from Angus Reid shows that Albertans are not split between pro-oil and pro-renewable camps. The Alberta Party believes that the vast majority of Albertans are not far left or far right, but pragmatists. We believe we can solve problems if we work together. It is always encouraging when there is polling data that confirms this belief. Albertans believe that both aspects of the energy industry should be given equal priority. You can see the full breakdown here and read Chris Varcoe’s Calgary Herald column on the poll here.
In our most recent shadow budget, Rebuilding Alberta, we outline many ways to put this value into practice, in all sectors including the oil & gas industry.
Growing Tech Sector
Calgary and Edmonton have been recognized a as hot spots for attracting ‘tech talent’ in North America. As of 2020, over 46,000 people in Calgary are employed in the industry. This is a 17.9 percent increase from 2015. Meanwhile, Edmonton has seen a 53.3 percent increase over the same period. In both cities post secondary institutions have pivoted to provide programs to supply skilled workers. The Alberta Party has long called for investor incentives and tax credits for this industry. In the last election we included a comprehensive plan to improve Alberta’s post secondary institutions. Highlights of the plan include partnering with industry to expand programs, cross training and predictable tuition.
