Leader's Update

Update from Jacquie Fenske

Hear Jacquie’s take on the news this week in Alberta.

We had, at least in the Edmonton area, some beautiful weather this week, and it made me pretty antsy. I want to get out there and meet with Albertans, talk about the issues that matter most, and how we can move our great province forward.

So this summer we’ll be holding the Big Listen 2.0. The first Big Listen consisted of party members and supporters hosting events across the province to hear from Albertans about what really mattered to them. The events gained a lot of attention and were well attended by people of all political stripes.

I want to make sure we’re listening this summer, not just talking. Stay tuned for details, and talk to our Shadow Cabinet, as they’ll be leading the Big Listen 2.0. But I just can’t wait to get out there - even if some of “getting out there” remains virtual.

Let me know your priorities, what questions you think we should ask Albertans, and what you’re most concerned about. I want to hear it!

Keep being you,

This Week in Alberta

Residential Schools

We support the government’s recently announced Residential Schools Community Research Grant.

You may remember we called for a rapid release of resources a few weeks ago.

Sadly, news of this grant came the day before the discovery of 715 unmarked graves in Saskatchewan. We strongly believe the government needs to provide more support for Indigenous communities as they go through this process at their own pace.

Renewable Energy

Vulcan County announced that Amazon will be buying energy from their 465 MW solar farm located southeast of Calgary.

Vulcan County is looking to diversify their tax base, having been hit hard by oil and gas companies that have defaulted on their tax payments to the tune of $3.7 million.

Read Alberta Party Shadow Cabinet Minister Robert Trembley's call for more investment in renewable energy in the Lethbridge Herald last year.

Water Quality

Alberta Party members in Southern Alberta continue to host forums about coal mining on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

This week, the Alberta government announced new measures to monitor and maintain water quality across Alberta, including around coal mines.

Interesting Read

Here is an interesting resource for those who want to learn more about reconciliation in Alberta. This article highlights several Indigenous voices and also includes many suggestions on how Albertans can help.
