No fooling: Flood mitigation could be delayed to 2019

All promises, no action from Dirks and the PCs as an important deadline for flood mitigation passes

Calgary, AB – April 1, 2015  – If the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Springbank Dry Dam hasn’t been started the project will be delayed by at least a year, says Alberta Party leader Greg Clark.

“At the open house sessions the government presented a project timeline that would deliver badly-needed mitigation by the spring of 2018,” said Clark. “The timeline assumed the EIA would start by March 31, 2015 and if it wasn’t, the project would miss an entire construction season. Given we haven’t heard an announcement I’m very worried the project will be delayed until at least 2019.”

Clark called out local MLA Gordon Dirks, whose Elbow constituency was hard hit by the flood. “Once again Gordon Dirks and the PCs are failing to follow through on their promises with action.”

Clark called on the province to pursue a multi-project approach to mitigation.

“I have always been concerned about the timeline for the Springbank project because of complexities of land acquisition and addressing landowner concerns,” said Clark. “The province must aggressively pursue either McLean Creek or the Glenmore Tunnel as well to ensure residents in flood zones and businesses in downtown Calgary are not impacted again.”

“The province controls the timeline for the EIA and if in fact it hasn’t started they have let down the people and businesses in flood zones in and around Calgary. I worry they’re dragging their feet to move out the cost of flood mitigation to later years.

“People and businesses impacted by the flood can’t afford the financial or social costs of another avoidable flood. We need flood mitigation and we need it now.”
