High Cost of Poverty
February 06, 2012
EDMONTON, AB - Today, Vibrant Communities Calgary and Action to End Poverty in Alberta released a report called Poverty Costs. This report highlights the fiscal necessity to deal with the root causes of poverty, rather than continuing to address the symptoms.
The Alberta Party believes in prevention and placing an emphasis on dealing with social issues before they reach the level of crisis. This brings savings at both the human and economic level.
“I agree with the findings in this report, a focus on prevention leads to economic savings,” says Alberta Party Leader Glenn Taylor. “It would save money and it would save lives.”
The Alberta Party has committed to implementing a poverty reduction strategy that addresses the root causes of poverty. The strategy includes linking such things as affordable housing, literacy and early childhood education components. This strategy was designed after consulting with the people of Alberta through the Alberta Party Big Listens.
“Those already living in poverty in Alberta have the knowledge to tell us what’s working and what isn’t in the system,” says MLA for Calgary-Currie Dave Taylor. “Let’s listen to them.”
It is essential that a system be put in place to provide Albertans with the supports they need to manage throughout all phases of life. It is only by supporting each other this way that we can build an Alberta that is great for all Albertans.
